Russia has already built a radar station in the city of Armavir, Krasnodar region, Russia, and has no need for such. In the interview with “Aravot”, former Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutunyan so vehemently denied the rumors circulated by the Azeri mass media that Russia, however, wants to build a military base in Azerbaijan.
Vagharshal Harutyunyan said, “The strategic relationship that we have with Russia are quite effective. Only the fact that Russia signed a document in 2010, by which it assumed the responsibility for ensuring security in the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, this means that RF sees Azerbaijan as a military threat thereto also. According to the logic of the signed document, the attack on Armenia means attacking Russia.
Only this document speaks of the high level of our relations. Russia’s relations with Armenia are strategic and allied. But, it is also natural that Russia has its own interests there in connection with the Caspian Sea distribution and oil matters. Let us not forget that Azerbaijan is a CIS member, while Armenia – a CSTO and EaEU member. Hence, I see no trepidation here.”
