“President’s speech was not a turning point in the global politics”

October 05,2015 17:30

Armen Badalyan opines that the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict depends on Azerbaijan and Russia

The RA President Serzh Sargsyan’s speech at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly became a topic of discussion in Armenia. The social network primarily addressed the “messages” made in the speech, a great attention was paid especially to the section about the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, given that the situation on the border continues to be tense. Expert for political and electoral technologies, Armen Badalyan, in the conversation with “Aravot”, immediately excluded that the RA President’s speech could have a lot of attention by the international community. “It was the UN General Assembly session, and every leader of a country raises the problems that he considers them appropriate. The speech of our incumbent president was not a turning point in the global politics, it was an ordinary speech,” says Armen Badalyan.

He noted that the UN General Assembly was focused primarily on the Russian and the US presidents’ speeches. “And the rest as to what about two hundred heads of the states would say, no one cares. The solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will not be under the UN auspices, and no turning speech there may change the conflicting situation around Nagorno- Karabakh,” says Mr. Badalyan. In the meantime, the messages spread by the President’s Staff and the Foreign Ministry actively mirrors the meetings of our country delegation with the representatives of various countries and organizations. The messages state that the cases of ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan are also discussed.

Mr. Badalyan treats this issue with reservation. “The UN Assembly is not the place and the figures there are not the ones who can change something. Basically, everybody is waiting for the Obama-Putin meeting, which is of great interest. The presidents of the US and Russia met with the leaders of different countries. In some cases, they were procedural meetings, in some issues, certain issues were settled, but for Armenia, it was not the place to introduce the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. There is a Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address this issue, there are diplomats, and there are quiet conditions,” says Mr. Badalyan.

Speaking about the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he said that Armenian is a very weak country to do anything, the other countries are involved in the process of conflict resolution. He notes that the superpowers will consider Azerbaijan’s word. “The issue of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict depends on Azerbaijan and Russia. Will Azerbaijan agree to deploy peacekeeping troops in the border of Nagorno-Karabakh, then it will receive the five regions? Everything depends on these two countries, also Turkey, and Iran’s interests must be taken into account too. Once these issues are resolved, Russia will inform Armenia, and Armenia will say to which of the options it agrees.”
