Recently, during the online press conference under the project of the “Dialogues” International Press Club for the Armenian Media: For the diversification of international information sources for the Armenian media” organized by the “Region” research center and supported by the OSCE Office in Yerevan, Aravot.am asked some questions to the Executive Director of the Center for US National interests, Paul Saunders. To our question that Azerbaijan is becoming increasingly active on the border continuously violating the ceasefire, so what he thinks whether the Armenian-Azerbaijani border tensions may possibly grow to the point that it turns into a large-scale hostilities, Mr. Saunders refrained from answering, noting that he is not an expert on this matters. Mr. Saunders also refrained from answering the question on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
They also touched upon the latest developments in Russian-US relations. Note that the Russian President Vladimir Putin after his latest talk with the US President Barack Obama said that “the relations between Russia and the United States are at a fairly low level. But it was not our initiative to cause such a slump in relations between Russia and the United States. That is the choice made by the United States. We are always prepared to develop contacts and restore full-scale relations.”
In response to our reminder, the American lawyer hurried to protect the American side, noting that generally in the international relations, it rarely happens that only one side is guilty and added, “I do not think that the responsibility of the problems occurred in the Russian-US relations falls on one state.” Mr. Saunders assured, “In the future, the United States will not change its attitude towards Russia’s current leadership.” Paul Saunders said frankly that the United States does not understand why Moscow is using its interests as currently.
Back to the growing confrontation between the US and Russia, in the Middle East, the US expert noted that under the leadership of Barack Obama, the US is trying to do everything possible to ensure stability, and stressed that Russia, in the face of Putin, also has a similar interest, but it understands other thing under the stability, it focuses mainly on stronger countries that can suppress the extremism, it does not focus on the model of a democratic country. In conclusion, Mr. Saunders noted, “Moscow also wants to show that it is a global power by confirming its role in the Middle East and Syria.”
