Why did the Italian conductor “settled down” in Armenia after Georgia?

November 19,2015 16:00

Italian conductor Gianluca Marcianò currently is working on several projects at Al. Spendiarian Opera and Ballet Theater by the invitation of artistic director Gegham Grigoryan. Recently, he conducted Verdi’s “La Traviata” opera. Incidentally, a specific publicity campaign for Gianluca Marciano has begun in Armenia. His rating rose specifically after being in the so-called “black list” by Azerbaijani foreign ministry, as he “dared” to be present in the Artsakh premiere of Verdi’s “Requiem” in Stepanakert. To the point, he was invited to this cultural event by the First Lady of Armenia. Note that earlier, in February 2012, he conducted the State Chamber Orchestra named after G. Garayev in Azerbaijan on the stage of the Azerbaijani State Philharmonic Hall.

Also, in 2015, April 24, he conducted the concert of “24/04” World Orchestra commemorating the centenary of the Armenian Genocide. Some of the Armenian artists are not particularly impressed with his “edited” Traviata” (director, Gegham Grigoryan). They say that with the exception of Hasmik Torosyan’s (Violet), Liparit Avetisyan’s (Alfredo), Arnold Kocharyan’s (Germont) performance, there was nothing particularly spectacular, although the hall was attended by senior officials and stormy “bravos” were voiced. Many people were also puzzled why they have invited this Italian under this scarce financial resources and whether we were short of opera conductors.

To the point, he was “brought” not from Italy but from the neighboring Georgia, from where Gianluca Marcianò left outraged. Since 2010, Marcianò was taking the position of the principal conductor at the National Opera and Ballet Theater in Tbilisi, which he left this February 2 and announced it over “Rustavi-2” TV channel, in the evening broadcast. The conductor had mentioned that the reason for his leaving was the abolishment of the post of the principal conductor by the opera theater director Davit Kintsurashvili and the definition of staff of an invited conductor. Still in 2014, the Georgian ballet theater group was already divided into two camps, a part was supporting the theater’s artistic director Giorgi Zhordania, and the other part was acting against him. The Italian conductor was unable to bring the staff being in an unhealthy moral-psychological state to a creative aspect, as well as to make his views and observations available to the Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.

According to sputnik-georgia.ru report, the Director of the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, Davit Kintsurashvili, commented Gianluca Marcianò’s departure from Tbilisi, said at a press conference that all the conditions are provided for the Italian conductor, the matter is different that he does not agree to work. According to the same source, Davi Kintsurashvili has also stated that Marcianò wants to be paid for a whole year by working in Georgia only 3-4 months.
