“Now and onwards, Turkey and Azerbaijan can be viewed as terrorism-sponsoring countries”

Says the Director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Hayk Demoyan

Yesterday, on November 24, Turkey downed the Russian aircraft “Su-24” in Syria. Some time later after the incident, Ankara announced that the Russian aircraft has violated its airspace, and after several warning Turkey has decided to down the aircraft. Later, Russian President Vladimir Putin countered that the Russian aircraft at the moment of downing was 1 km away from the Turkish border and is was downed in Syria. Putin also promised that this incident will not remain without consequences, and they will not tolerate such actions.

In an interview with “Aravot”, the Director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute Hayk Demoyan said that Turkey passed to a dramatic escalation, which is proved by the direct involvement of the Turkish ruling government both in sponsoring the “Islamic state” terrorists group, supplying them and receiving profit from this structure. “This is already definite. Of course, it is surprising that the Russian side has responded with restraint. It’s true, clear assessments were made because with this action, Turkey obviously showed that it is on the side of the terrorists.” Mr. Demoyan opines that the shocking fact is that this is taking place after the assembly in Antalya where it seems everything was clear.

Hayk Demoyan noted that striking the Air Force of the opposite side and destruction means one thing that Turkey clearly showed that the weakening of the “Islamic state” is not desired for it. “Purely politically, it implies the weakening of Syria and further destruction, and economically, Turkey also benefits economically. Geopolitically, the same “Islamic state” was definitely to be under the control of the Turkish intelligence agencies and armed forces.”

According to Demoyan, in any case, this force will be used as a toothpick against Iraq, and will be tried to be used in intermediate forms against Iran, later against Jordan and Israel. “This is a force that Turkey is losing. Turkey is also losing its role as a player on the background of Russian active military operations.” He does not rule out that this downing is not the sole decision of Turkey. “It has also received the approval from the allies because this is a unique and unprecedented bold move by Turkey, with which it simply throws down the gauntlet to the Russian side by obviously demonstrating itself as an opponent side and viewing Russia as an enemy. While the enemies are destroyed.” After the incident, there were opinions voiced in the Russian press saying that this incident was at hand to Vladimir Putin to start a confrontation against NATO.

To the question of “Aravot” whether this option is possible, Hayk Demoyan replied that he does not think so because the balance of forces here would not be in favor of Russia, especially in the area like the Middle East. “Here we can just appear in a trap. If this is a coordinated action, I tend to believe that that this move solves several problems. First, to isolate Russia and to possibly diminish its role in the destruction of the “Islamic state”, and later to be strengthened in Syria, we are talking both from the tactical and strategic point of view. NATO also enters into active actions.”

In his words, isolating Russia and limiting its role with this move, they are trying to make other players be active while Russia will be stuck in the diplomatic and other sludge with Turkey after this incident. “I wonder what drastic steps will be followed or whether they are already followed. The presence of the Turkish business in Russia is quite large, especially in construction companies.” Mr. Demoyan opines that if this escalation grows in the future, Armenia and Azerbaijan will be automatically engaged in these hostile zones. “Here, it is very important for us to follow the development of the events as this action may be exceptional in the last 25 years because the two countries had serious strategic grounds for cooperation. The move is a slap to Russia, whose powerful presence in the Middle East could not but bother Ankara who seeks the role of a sole power center.”

It is obvious for the Director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute that a military action occurred with an obviously hostile manifestation that can lead to complications. “Turkey also showed that it is the he sponsor patron of the “Islamic state”. Turkey was especially worried about the deactivation of the economic component as it was receiving benefit from the “Islamic state”. The bombings of the last 3-4 days destroyed the entire supply chain, and it was a direct blow to Turkey.” Hayk Demoyan also said that the final wording here is as follows: “Turkey and Azerbaijan as state unions in the Middle East and the entire Eurasian region can now and onwards be viewed as terrorism-sponsoring and terrorism-supporting countries.”
