Aravot.am asked the Chairman of Shirak Center NGO Vahan Tumasian dealing with social issues whether the hardships in Gyumri, unemployment and homelessness are not a reason for losing the type of Gyumri.
“Fortunately, the Gyumri type cannot be lost because it is originally a town, and it is seen in the world arenas; the merit of Gyumri resident is demonstrated. Simply, unfortunately, Gyumri is divided into two parts, it seems we are living in two different realities. The true Gyumri is gradually getting smaller, but there are also domik settlements, homeless, needy people, who are isolated from the community life, and they seem to create a separate community within the community. And if earlier domiks or homelessness in the whole city was a common phenomenon, no one made a difference, now, it appears such phrases in the people’s lexicon as a domik dweller and so on and so forth. This is very painful. In other words, it seems there are two different realities in one city.”
