The political analyst about Serzh Sargsyan’s and Ilham Aliyev’s toast

December 21,2015 11:58

Political analyst Sergey Minasyan estimates the regular meeting of Serzh Sargsyan-Aliyev, a very important meeting. “It was important in the sense that it was the only bipartite meeting during this year,” said the political analyst. Note that the meeting in Switzerland discussed the steps directed to the ease of tension in the conflict zone and the possibilities of progress in the settlement of the problem. “The meeting highlighted the sentence mentioned in yesterday’s statement by the three co-chairs that the presidents agreed to support the Minsk Group activities for the further reduction of tension create new mechanisms on the contact line. All other sentences and statements were very formal, and it is very hard to speak about the progress or success. Only based on this sentence, one can say that maybe something has happened, but there have been dozens of such meetings, after which Aliyev has returned to Baku making the opposite statements. Whether currently Azerbaijan ready for making progress in this matter or not, I doubt,” said the political scientist Sergei Minasyan in an interview with us.

To our observation that the OSCE Minsk Group US Co-Chair James Warlick announced that the meeting of the presidents concluded with a toast, so whether this means a meeting in a warmer atmosphere, the political analyst continued, ‘The toast was associated only with the holiday season. In Switzerland and generally in the West, Christmas is celebrated in the coming days, and the toast was explained by this fact, I do not think that such serious agreements were obtained causing an opportunity for special toasts.”

To our question about the posture of Azerbaijan on the background of escalation of Russian-Turkish relations, whether it is possible for Turkey to push Azerbaijan against Armenia and promote to more frequent attacks, Sergey Minasyan continued, “I do not think that Turkey is overly interested in continuing the further escalation with Russia, and hardly Azerbaijan would like to exacerbate the relations in this difficult situation, when it tries to refrain from making orientation Russia and Turkey, although it is evident that the sympathy is addressed towards Turkey. Azerbaijan has always been afraid of Russia and hardly they will make a drastic choice in this situation, resulting in serious danger to them.”
