Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, referring to the meeting with him and the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan held in Bern, Switzerland, announced that the meeting was formal. In this regard, in an interview with Aravot.am, the “Heritage” faction member and the Chairman of the Standing Committee on NA foreign relations, Tevan Poghosyan, said, “Does it happen that one side is going to the meeting formally while the other side – seriously? I do not know what he meant by saying formal: by the Armenian side or by Azerbaijan over there. I think that any of this kind of meetings are formal for Aliyev. He is the problem. If he does not take such meetings serious, this does not mean that Azerbaijan does not want to have a negotiation process to find the solution of the problem peacefully.
We must shape our demands of what to do to advance the interests of the Armenian and reach Armenophile solutions. There is a war on the frontline, which we have to carry on with honor and ensure our victory. In the meantime, the world would probably realize this kind of behavior by Azerbaijan and will begin changing its approach. We should be more concerned about our domestic problems and the development of economy. If the person treats these meeting as formal, what we can do, we need to make the time working to our benefit because just sitting idle is no good too. We need to keep working and in the meantime, either Azerbaijan will come to consciousness or it will be forced to come to consciousness.”
According to Tevan Poghosyan, with his behavior, Aliyev makes all the co-chairs and the international community to change their attitude, accordingly, Armenia becomes the party that benefits from such meetings, “We need to realize one thing: prior to entering the negotiating room, our army has created such a situation in the frontline that the Armenian negotiators are able to enter the room like a winner and do not allow Azerbaijan to act there from high positions. With all his statements that if not for any benefit, Aliyev will solve the problem thru military ways, as of today, it proves that he will be unable to solve the issue. Everybody has shaped the consciousness that Azerbaijan does not have the military potential to be able to solve the problem by military means. In order to keep this situation unchanged, we need to be engaged with our domestic problems and strengthen our economy.”
