Last year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. This meeting gave rise to various interpretations that the Azerbaijani oil “will buy” the human rights and will have an impact on Germany’s position. After this meeting, representative of the German Foreign Chamber of Commerce, Florian Schroeder, spoke about a close cooperation with Azerbaijan and stated that Germany is ready to help Azerbaijan to diversify its economy, particularly in the creation of high-tech production.
“Germany continues to remain one of the main foreign trade partners of Azerbaijan in the European continent.” Statements are voiced at the level of foreign ministers of Germany that Azerbaijan is an important strategic partner for Germany. The two countries are successfully cooperating in the political and economic spheres, particularly in the energy sector. Today, Aravot.am asked the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Armenia, Matthias Kisler, whether judging from Aliyev-Merkel meeting, we can say that Germany is in more good-neighborly relations with Azerbaijan than with Armenia. He replied that there is no such thing, “We are conducting a balanced policy between the two countries. Angela Merkel also had meetings with President Sargsyan, so there is no problem in meeting with Aliyev.”
