Ruben Melkonyan, Davutoğlu is facing a political dilemma

March 08,2016 19:00

On March 7, Brussels will host the Turkey-EU summit. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu prior to leaving for Brussels met a meeting with the reporters during which he has announced that Turkey does not want to see Syria split. He added that Turkey does not need the recurrence of the split in the region of 100 years ago. We must use all the efforts to unite the region. In this regard, Aravot.am talked to Turkologist Ruben Melkonyan. “In my opinion, Davutoğlu is facing the dilemma of identity because his theoretical statements and practical steps differ from one another. In other words, theorist Davutoglu and Prime Minister Davutoglu, essentially, are doing actions opposite to each other.

Let us not forget that the same Davutoglu has suggested several other theories – 0 problems with the neighbors, stable region and so on. I think that when it comes to the true politics, in other words, to the “realpolitik” situation, then Davutoglu’s these theories do not go beyond the level of statements. These statements, I think, will also have the same fate,” he said.

According to the Turkologist, Davutoglu statement contains a contradiction in it as the same Davutoglu or the Turkish Government, the president has repeatedly mentioned other problems, particularly, the current legitimate authorities of Syria should go away, “In other words, they expressed in favor of the splitting of Syria, I believe that these statements are void today. In addition, it is known from the history that Turkey always had territorial ambitions against Syria, and it is no secret that a part of Syria was annexed to Turkey in 1939, and these ambitions are continued in the future. I think that the Turkish territorial ambitions underlie the current Turkish-Syrian conflict.”
