The meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Russia, Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, respectfully, in Moscow is over. We are informed from the presidential release that Serzh Sargsyan has once again stated that Armenia firmly supports the Russian position regarding Syria. Vladimir Putin, however, has said nothing about the Karabakh conflict settlement. During the latest session of the CSTO, the RA President expressed dissatisfaction that Armenia’s allies in this structure are not interested in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the growing tension on Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
Aravot.am was curious to learn from political analyst Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan about the reason of why Putin did not refer to the above questions. “Russia’s politics in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement is known. It is a mediator state and is trying to stay in the framework of its mission. There is no unilateral statement of support here,” replied Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan. Addressing Armenia’s position on the developments in the Middle East, the political analyst said that Syria was the country that was an ally for our country, “Unfortunately, the developments over there not only contributed to the loss of Syria for the Armenian side but also caused serious problems for the Armenian community. From the perspective, it is very normal and logical that Yerevan is officially supporting the Assad authorities in this conflict.”
