Research on Armenian Architecture is preparing the publication of the book “Armenian Stone Inscriptions in Georgia.”
Aravot.am learned this from the Chairman of the Foundation, expert in the study of historic monuments and historian Samvel Karapetyan, “Lithograph is one example in the nature. If the inscriptions are the copies, then the lithograph is one. If one lithograph is destroyed, this one page is erased from the history. Therefore, lithographs must be “collected” because they are subject to the time and environmental impact, also are deliberately destroyed,” said Karapetyan referring to the importance of lithography.
He noted that in the case of Georgia, in the last two decades, the Armenian inscriptions are destroyed more intentionally, trying to erase the Armenian trace in Georgia, “For example, the St. Gevorg Church located in one of the nearby villages of Tbilisi which was of great importance for the Nersisyan school. The monastery had a lot of pilgrims and the revenue was transferred to the Nersisyan school. Now, the Georgian clergy has settled in this famous Armenian monastery. The stage of the church is destroyed, the Armenian symbols and inscriptions are destroyed. Wherever they have seen Armenian letters, they have scratched them.” According to the expert in the study of monuments, the Georgians know very well what sanctuary they have mastered, even seeing a car with Armenian place number they get confused. “As they say “he that commits a fault thinks everyone speaks of it.” They know what they have done.”
Our interlocutor noted that Georgia has also destroyed the inscriptions of Armenian cemeteries and ancient houses, “The Holy Cross Armenian Church in Tbilisi is also owned. In Soviet years, it was a pharmacy warehouse. I have gone to the Church many times, but it was closed. In 2012, when we went again, there was an incident, the candle seller immediately attacked us, saying, “do not take pictures, it is not allowed.” The stage was demolished and frescoes in Georgian inscriptions were made.”
