“A more radical move can be made”

Aghasi Yenokyan denotes his expectations of anti-terrorism campaign

The series of terrorist attacks in the capital of Europe, Brussels, horrified the whole world. There is already Information about the suspected terrorists but their demand, so to say, is not formulated and it caused the surprise of the Director of Armenian Center for Political and International Studies, political analyst Aghasi Yenokyan.

In an interview with “Aravot”, he considered it token that the terrorism occurred in Brussels where the European Union and NATO governance bodies are centralized. “We see that the traces of the previous terrorism are taking to Brussels where a well-organized group is operating,” says Mr. Yenokyan and notes that these structures should give an adequate response to the terrorists. “There should be one response to make anti-terrorist measures against terrorism with technical means and it is the enhancement of security, searches on the borders but one more radical move can be made like the United States did after the terrorist attacks on September 11 when it turned to NATO to exploit the fifth Article of NATO and in fact, the NATO entered Afghanistan. Now, if Belgium turns to NATO, it is not excluded that ground operations will begin in Syria,” said our interlocutor noting that he was expecting this move much earlier.

Addressing Russia’s “rebuking” statement that Europe needed not to separate “good and bad terrorists”, Mr. Yenokyan says, “Russia’s statement somehow looks like a blackmail. In fact, Russia says, as long as Russia is not involved in the dialogue on Ukraine, similar actions will be continued. If we take into account that some of the arrested suspects are citizens of Russia, earlier the terrorists were citizens of Russia during the Boston bombings and a series of terrorist acts in the US, here, we cannot also exclude the fact that Russia is somehow involved in these actions. In fact, by withdrawing its troops from Syria, it also adopts another policy that will make it take into account.”

Referring to Turkey’s urges that the fight against the terrorists should also include the fight against the Kurds, Mr. Yenokyan says, “Turkey is trying to advance its agenda and its agenda today is to resolve the issue of the Kurds, also to include the Kurdish structures into the list of terrorist organizations and so on.” Aghasi Yenokyan believes that after these terrorist attacks in the Middle East, the anti-terrorist activities will intensify. “Definitely, these terrorist attacks will not scare Europe rather than will strengthen its decisiveness.” According to our interlocutor, the events happening in the Middle East will have their impact on Armenia. “If there is a Russia-Turkey conflict here, then it will also have its impact on Armenia. Now, it’s hard to say what steps will be taken. The first question, however, is the future steps of Russia and Turkey, after which we can draw certain assumptions,” says Mr. Yenokyan.
