“Russia’s mission is not the war but to act as a peace-builder”

April 02,2016 22:00

Russian State Duma deputy Alexander Ageev analyzes the geopolitical events and Russia’s involvement into it

“Prior to starting the operation, Russian President Vladimir Putin made it clear that our problem was to stabilize the Syrian government and create conditions not only for internal political negotiation process but also for the peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict,” sais member of “Fair Russia” party, also a State Duma deputy, Alexander Ageev, in an exclusive interview with “Aravot”.

We talked to him about the recent developing geopolitical events and Russia’s role in it. “By adopting the decision to withdraw the main armed forces, the Russian leadership stresses that the problems are resolved completely, – he said, referring to the withdrawal of Russia’s Air Forces from Syria, – The actions of Russia’s armed groupings radically broke the situation in Syria. The fundamental infrastructures of the terrorists and the main supply roads are destroyed by creating favorable conditions for the attack of Syrian troops. Later, it became known that the Syrian troops have occupied Palmyra. Was it possible to forecast such a thing?” Mr. Ageev notes that along with the implemented operation, Russia’s military-technical and humanitarian assistance to Syria should also be taken into account, in addition, the effective work of military experts, “without which today’s victory of the Syrian army would not be possible.” “It is important to emphasize that the operation of the Russian Air Force has supported and enhanced the national army, as well as Kurdish and other patriotic and volunteer units,” he said, stressing that the successes of the operations of Russian Air Force created conditions to commence negotiation process and peaceful settlement of the crisis. “Russia’s mission is not the war but acting as a peace-builder,” – he says and reminds that a part of the Russian military forces are still in Syria.

Alexander Ageev believes that the peculiarities of the operation implemented by Russian air force in Syria showed the world the possibilities of the new Russian Air Force. “I believe that the success of the operation became a serious sobering for many people, – he says, – Today, it is very obvious for many people that Russia is dictating agenda in the international politics of the Middle East.”

Referring to the importance of Russia in the international community, Russian State Duma deputy mentions Russian President’s meetings of the previous week, “Last Thursday, not only the US State Secretary John Kerry but also Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, General Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, who emphasized that Russia plays an important role in the Middle East, were in Moscow. It is fundamental importance that the successes of the military operation are continued by diplomatic success.” Speaking of the influence of geopolitical developments in post-Soviet countries and their relations with Russia, Mr. Ageev notes that there are countries here that are in good relations with Russia, and there are also others that are in bad relations. “Anyway, there is the danger of extremist ideas and color revolutions in many post-Soviet countries. But I am convinced that the examples of the state have already passed this way are considered the best way of fighting against “brainwashing”.”

We also spoke with Russian MPs about the two-year demand of the international community to Russia: to return Crimea to Ukraine. “All these calls to return the Crimea are considered absurd. The decision to reunite Russia was made by the citizens who used their right to self-determination, says the interlocutor, adding, – this decision is made by the citizens of the Crimea and Sevastopol rather than by the Russian president or by the leaders of “Russian Spring”, therefore, it must be respected. If everything had gone just like it was thought by the West, then in the past two years, the world perhaps would see people protesting in this Peninsula,” says Alexander Ageev, noting that however, now, Russian President’s support to the population here is obvious.

“I must say that in April, Yalta is going to host an international economic forum, which will be the first time attended by the European parliamentary delegation on business.” “It is not a challenge but a cynical mockery to the civilized world,” – this is the observation by the RF deputy about the disturbing phenomenon in the world – the terrorism. “Our “Fair Russia” faction, after the terrorist attack in Brussels, has submitted a bill to the Russian State Duma aimed at the strictest form of punishment against the terrorism. The document envisages gallows as a punishment in the case of the act of terrorism, organizing it and an accomplice to the terrorist organizations. Terrorism has no borders in every sense of this word, therefore, the most important task of the European leaders to understand that it is impossible to confront alone against this monstrous evil,” says Mr. Ageev and adds that on the other hand, the acts of terrorism taking place in Europe are also a result of destructive policies going on in the Middle East.

“I think that everybody understands to which state and why it is beneficial to feed and activate the bee’s nest of terrorists. There will overcoming challenges only when the European leaders will eventually understand the true value and their key summaries, including for their own policies, and become independent for making important decisions. The imitation of the fight against terrorism and hypocrisy in this matter are very bad partners. Terrorism is an evil and dangerous for everyone.”
