So far, we are not a “state nation”

May 06,2016 12:07

Recently, during a discussion on the Facebook, I understood from the comments of numerous users that we, the Armenians, are obligated to be anti-Semitic (anti-Jews) because, in the course of the history, the Jews and then the state of Israel have done this-or-that “bad things” to us. This is followed by numerous real, imaginary and largely conspiratorial arguments. Let us no discuss these things and assume for a moment that all are correct. But in that case, we “similarly successfully” should be anti-Arab, anti-Persian, anti-German, anti-Russian and anti-Englishman because, in the course of our age-long history, these nations or their states have “offended” us many times.

Yes, it is possible to carry some psychological “scars” at the level of genetic memory. But pushing them to the foreground is absolutely unacceptable when you have a state and are trying to formulate the interests of this state. If all nations of the world are guided by these “offensiveness” then there would be no friendly and allied countries. For they are allies not because have had no problems with each other throughout the history but because their interests coincided in the given period of the history. This also means that this interest may be conflicting in the next period.

Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad were spending their holidays together with their families. Now, one of highest priorities of the President of Turkey is Assad’s deprivation from the power. Russia sells weapons and provokes aggression to Azerbaijan not because it loves Azerbaijanis more than us or is an “anti-Armenian”, Russia simply wants to keep our neighboring country under its influence, and also, certainly, makes money. The Armenian genocide occurred not because the world was not sympathetic to us but the prevention of the slaughter did not stem from the interests of Russia, France, Britain and Germany in particular.

Now, should we be offended by anyone, and be an “anti-” to any nation? No, it is a behavior of a 5-year old child. On the contrary, we should look for common interests with everyone. Including, do not be surprised, also with Turkey and Azerbaijan. This “crossing points” could be sporadic or numerous but no 100% interests-coincidence exists. The global conspiracy theories against you pop up when the interests of your state are not formulated and your state institutions work poorly. It is now the time when you begin listing who has done “bad things” to you.

I read somewhere an observation of a foreigner about Armenians: you are very smart and brave but you are not a state nation at all. I am sure that this is not a verdict.
