Stepan Grigoryan. “Germany gave a slap in the face of its once ally Turkey”

June 03,2016 14:28

101 years after the Armenian Genocide, German Parliament passed the resolution on the recognition with only one “against” and one “abstain” vote. This resolution has been circulating in the Bundestag for several years. It obtained so-called “flesh and blood” in the stage when there are some confusions in the relations between Germany and Turkey. To the observation of Aravot.am, Chairman of “Globalization and regional cooperation” NGO and political analyst Stepan Grigoryan responded as follows: “In any case, we need to understand that nevertheless there is an element of restoring justice in the fundamental part of the decision.” The political analyst reminded that last year, during the days of the 100th anniversary of the Genocide, German president announced that these events were genocide.

Stepan Grigoryan reminds that the German president is not engaged in economic issues, “specifics.” He is a man of a great reputation in Germany, in political, moral and diplomatic spheres. “Hence, despite everything, the moral component exists in the adoption of this resolution,” – said our interlocutor, also reminding the long ongoing debates about studying the archives of the genocide available in Germany and opening them up.

At the same time, the political analyst does not exclude the possibility of availability of specific political interests of Germany in all this, “Erdoğan’s recent days’ policy played a major role in the final decision associated with refugees, human rights, the Kurds inside the country, Syria, other neighbors and so on. Can you imagine that the Turks were even calling the lawmakers of the Bundestag and intimidating, if you adopt it, we’ll do this-and-this … it is clear that the lawmakers of such a powerful country like Germany would not be afraid of it and all that gave an opposite reaction.” To the question that if we go beyond the fact that the Armenian issue, in any case, was used as a bludgeon over Turkey’s head, so what this recognition give to Armenia and Armenians, our interlocutor replied, “The fact that Germany is the one who recognized it, it speaks to the fact that it will have a big impact, and a number of European countries will unequivocally recognize the Armenian Genocide. Germany is an influential country, but in this case, importantly that Germany was Turkey’s ally during the two world wars. Obviously, this was a big psychological blow against Turkey. And this will be assessed by the world, as Germany is a progressive and influential state in the world, politically and economically. All this will have its effect. However, this slap also means that there will also be rearrangements in the region. It is a signal to Turkey that it is going in a wrong way, Erdoğan is running a wrong policy.”
