Today, at the National Assembly, PAP faction leader Naira Zohrabyan referred to the letter of the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, addressed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. She said that it was an unprecedented shame in the entire history of Armenia and characterized the letter as “shameful and immoral”, “This is a state and national treason by the high-rank priest with no precedent in the entire history of Armenia.” Naira Zohrabyan has applied to the numerous representatives of the Armenian community in Turkey on this issue, hence, the lawmaker called on the Catholicos of All Armenians to convene a general church council by the powers attributed to him by the Church Rules of Law and raise the issue of unfrocking the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, Archbishop Aram Ateshyan,
“This should be the issue of all Armenians because there has never been such an unprecedented shameful letter. It is a shame to all of us and this must lead to conclusions shortly.” RPA MP Gagik Minasyan responded that the Armenian Apostolic Church has duly responded to it, “On the one hand, we must protest against it, but on the other hand, understand that there is a structure – the Sacred Armenian Apostolic Church. Let us leave the spiritual matters to spiritual fathers.”
