Generation change has matured

June 23,2016 11:03

One year ago, I finally became convinced that the generation that comes after us is better by its qualities than we. It happened during the “Electric Yerevan” protest. The young people who were protesting against the electricity prices hike were not affiliated with any political party, they did not have pronounced leaders, they were not acting by “brain-callus-causing” speeches and mottos iterated over 25 years. They just had come to sit down in Baghramyan Avenue, spent the nights there singing, dancing and socializing. They were different by their level of education, social status and origin but they were united under the sense of a STATE, a state where they are born and where hopefully are going to live.

It was an eruption of a positive energy that we saw in another, more tragic circumstances – the April war, but look, again, a manifestation of a new, I am not afraid of this word, bright generation. They seem to have to prove the known truth that the courage is not when the person is not afraid of anything, but when the person has higher objectives to overcome his fear. A question, why is this energy not used to solve the major problems facing our country? And in particular, why are the youth of the political party as opposed to those standing on the border and the protestants of “Electric Yerevan” so gray, dull and “square”?

The reason is that over the 25 years we have not created the “elevators” that would lift up the worthy. A normal young man has an aversion to public service or political activities even in the case when such a perspective by miracle is opened for him. Seeing people with ties and badges, he does everything to avoid this surrounding.

It is very natural but it cannot last long. When I see that in addition to the real party members gathered at the opposition rallies, pensioners wondering near the Freedom Square are also attending the rally with the request, “Dear Poghos, dear Petros, save us from these authorities,” I understand that the time for the change of generation has come. The best young people, who, I repeat, are the majority in Armenia do not find a place in the political and social spheres, consequently, sooner or later, they come out to the street with their demands. The demands will be specific, for example, not to pass a new Tax Code against honest and conscientious taxpayers.

And if the demand is formulated clearly and competently, the police will not know what to do. Like in the case of “Electric Yerevan”.
