Armen Arabian, Director of the State Chamber Choir of Armenia, is impressed by the Holy Mass delivered by Pope Francis at the Vardanants Square in Gyumri. “An altar was built and a stage next to the tabernacle for the choirs. No Pope had offered a Divine Liturgy outside of the Vatican since the 6th century, and this was a unique case. Moreover, a Catholic liturgy was performed in Latin singing, which was performed by the State Chamber Choir of Armenia conducted by Robert Mlkeyan,” – said Mr. Arabian in an interview with Aravot.am. He added that the “Saghmosergu” (Psalmist) Men Choir conducted by Vahe Begoyan and “Holy Mother of Armenia” Women Choir had joined them to supplement the State Chamber Choir of Armenia.
The Director of the State Chamber Choir of Armenia assured that the Pope was very touched and after the Catholic liturgy, he had approached and expressed special thanks to the professional performance. As Arabian mentioned, the Pope had said that he did not expect to hear such a high art singing in Armenia. All three choirs were encouraged, they worked voluntarily and with great pleasure. “They participated in the liturgy with great enthusiasm, both in the Chamber Choir and the two small choirs joining them. We were training for about a month, and Robert Mlkeyan was constantly traveling back and forth to Yerevan and Gyumri,” said Armen Arabian. He also expressed hope that after the Pope’s visit, many-many people would reconsider their lifestyle and living.
