Media expert Samvel Martirosyan reported that the Pope’s visit to Armenia was almost neglected by the Russian media. “The coverage was quite passive. It was a presentation of fact mainly by the news agencies. This, I believe, is generally associated with Russia’s problems with the West, as the Vatican is viewed in Moscow not only as a religious but also a political power. While in the international newsfeed, the Pope’s visit was actively covered. In the Catholic countries, certainly, the theme was covered more. The major international media have covered the theme quite actively, particularly the developments regarding the Genocide. Here, depending on the posture of the country, there were differences in the use of the word genocide, for example. A number of media were putting this word in the quotation to avoid leaving an impression that they are recognizing the Genocide.”
