“I think it was a very sober decision and appreciated. Thus, they proved, irrespective of the chosen method, that in all cases they are against the bloodshed and are ready to resolve the issues peacefully and politically,” – said Ruben Babayan, stage producer and Director of Yerevan Puppet Theater named after H. Tumanyan, in an interview with Aravot.am, referring to the fact of surrender of “Sasna Tsrer” group to the authorities. In his words, if everything remains the same in the country after what has happened, it will be not possible to control the “volcanoes”, “If we assess what happened soberly, irrespective of the outcome, we all are a loser. We can be a winner as a result of consent and mutual understanding. I wish it were so that the ability to understand and listen each other wins. I also consider the shed of blood and victims my fault. Unless each of takes this sin on us, a way will be opened for the new bloodshed.”
Commenting on the violence by the police against protesters and reporters recently in Sari Tagh area, Ruben Babayan said, “It was a crime that must be fully disclosed if we want to have a dialogue in the country. The demand of the society must be to take the case until the end and be consistent with the defense of rights every day. Illegality should be prevented every day.” Ruben Babayan sends the following call to the authorities in the context of the decision of “Sasna Tsrer” to surrender, “Do not try to be engaged in vengeance, thinking that it is a victory, and punish the perpetrators of the unlawfulness.”
Our interlocutor noted that the press actively discussed the fact of detention of Canadian-Armenian actress, Arsinée Khanjyan, but thinks that there is no difference in the case of unlawful detention whether the unlawful victim is a recognized person or an ordinary citizen, “If the person is innocent, then he is innocent, irrespective of the status.” Referring to the rumors that a group of intellectuals has forced Zhirayr Sefilyan to sign the letter, Ruben Babayan said that initially the edited version of the letter was published, of which he was unaware and in which the estimates addressed to “Sasna Tsrer” were tough, and the proposal was to “surrender.” While in the real letter, according to Babayan, the individual and tough estimates were missing, and the proposal was not to surrender but to “lay down the weapons”, as the terms are different. “To lay down weapons means an invitation to a dialogue,” – said the stage director.
