The main outcome of the CSTO events held in Armenia was not the fact that the rep of our country did not become the secretary general of this organization. Nor was the fact that Kazakh President Nazarbayev got sick with “diplomatic flu.” These were trifles. What should the Armenian General do in the position of a Secretary General of the CSTO when this organization is called to exclusively serve the military strategic interests of Russia? Importantly are the very interests, which unfortunately currently are in sharp contrast to the interests of the United States.
The approval of the list of “terroristic organizations” in Yerevan is one of the manifestations of this contradiction. And the matter here as you understand is not about the Eurasian region but Syria where Russia and the United States are almost at war with each other. The so-called discrepancy of the term “terrorism” emerges against this background. The armed rebels fighting against Assad are terrorists for Russia, while for the United States they are “oppositionists”. In both cases, the assessments seem do not reflect the reality. The armed struggle against the government, indeed, is not necessarily to be terroristic. On the other hand, the opposition, it seems to me, cannot be armed.
To attack or not to attack the “oppositionists” (in one terminology) or the “terrorists” (in another terminology), this is the ground of the misreading between the two powers because the Russians are sponsoring Assad, while the Americans – the “Kalashnikov” and artillery possessing “oppositionists”. And so, Russia makes four countries be a part of this dispute, namely Armenia, which for many reasons, including for having a multi-thousand Armenian community in Syria, would be better to take a neutral position. But no, we have appeared in the “Russian alliance”, and together with our common fate nation, we have to sign the “lists of terroristic groups” imposed by Russia.
Unlike the “pro-Western” supporters, I think that the “American alliance” would also impose some papers to us, which we would be forced to sign. And again, unlike them, I do not think that one pole is the embodiment of evil while the other – an ardent humanism. It would be ideal in general not to be involved in any alien games. But since it is practically impossible, we must at least gain some benefits by getting involved in the game. These are the benefits that are invisible.
