In an interview with “Reuters”, President Serzh Sargsyan said that if the RPA fails in the elections, he has nothing to do with the politics, but at the same time, he excluded that the RPA will defeat. Aravot.am asked the Secretary of the RPA faction, Gagik Melikyan, whether this means that he sees things to do in the politics although earlier he had stated that he will not hold any position, so where you see him after the elections. Gagik Melikyan replied, “Serzh Sargsyan has been in active politics since the very beginning of independence years, is and will be. He is a major political figure in the Republic of Armenia and why not, also recognized worldwide. Saying that he sees himself or not, I think that he does not only see himself in the politics but also the Republican Party sees him in active politics in the future. The RA President has always been involved in active politics and will be in active politics.”
To the question of why in this case prior to the constitutional amendments he announced that he is not going to occupy any position, he said that it will not be a Speaker of the National Assembly, a Prime Minister, Gagik Melikyan replied, “I think all this will depend on what votes the RPA will have in the upcoming national elections. I think that the Republican party will have serious votes and RA President Serzh Sargsyan will have his serious top role in the political arena.” We asked to clarify whether he will be a Prime Minister, a Speaker of the National Assembly, he replied, “The highest role.”

ANC faction leader Levon Zurabyan told us that there is a serious contradiction in Serzh Sargsyan’s statements. To the question in the interview with “Al Jazeera” whether it is possible for you to be a Prime Minister, Serzh Sargsyan had replied that it was too early to talk about it and we have to wait for the outcome of the elections. Levon Zurabyan said, “Prior to the constitutional referendum, he unequivocally said that he will never claims for the position of a leader of the state, he said that a man should not be in the same position more than two terms and he very clearly said that if the Constitution is amended, he will not claim for the position of a Prime Minister nor a president. After such an unequivocal confirmation to say that my decision to be a prime minister depends on certain developments, it already falls into contradiction. He shows that actually as we were warning before the constitutional referendum, his assertions are serving one purpose: to facilitate the adoption of the Constitutional amendments, while in reality, the intention is entirely different.”
