The Armenian new “Tsets” (The Moth) satirical newspaper will be for sale in the last ten days of January. The first issue was published last year. The founder of “Medialab”, Marianna Grigoryan, who is also the editor-in-chief of the satirical newspaper, told Aravot.am that they had the idea of publishing of such satirical newspaper a long time ago, but decided to fulfill this idea last year during the exhibition in Vanadzor. The editorial staff had also decided to distribute this newspaper free in the public transport and metro stations but the municipality has banned without being familiar with the content of the newspaper.
Marianna Grigoryan mentioned that when they applied to the municipality for the permission, the newspaper was not yet issued, “Presumably, they had seen the satires posted on our website and have realized that it is not something to be shown. Since we are criticizing the government-run policy, I think they had tried to suspend our process outside of Internet with the refusal. Generally, we refer to all political forces that are at the center of the events and are of interest at the moment. We ave an impartial attitude to everyone and do not spare anyone. Our goal is to take the political satires with their great influence outside the nternet and make it available in the marzes and villages. In addition, we wanted to make the satirical newspaper public as it is the first newspaper of its kind in Armenia,” said Marianna Grigoryan.
Arthur Gevorgyan, Advisor to Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan, has reasoned the refusal of the distribution of the newspaper in writing as follows: “Given the fact that the “Tsets” is a monthly newspaper with political satires, the posting of it in the public transport and metro stations can raise the complaint of passengers and citizens and a cause for an insult to the individuals, hence, we find that giving a consent to this request is inappropriate.”
