With regard to the adoption of the clamorous law on the conscription of all 18-year-olds, in an interview with Aravot.am, former Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutyunyan said that the necessity of this law always existed but it was refused on the grounds that we will cause a harm to the science.
As mentioned by Mr. Harutyunyan, the conscription of all 18-year-olds is a right decision, “It is a gap, on the one hand, as our army has been established thanks to this decision. Georgia went by another way, reasoning that people need to serve for the sciences. We need to take the reality into account, if one gap emerges, it is definitely used. This approach ensures the combativeness and equality of the army. Everyone is going to serve in the army.”
The announcement of Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan that conditions will be created for the conscription of women and a service promotion will be provided, caused a stir among the public. As interpreted by Vagharshak Harutyunyan, women actually have a great potential, and there is no problem that the potential of women will also be used in the army. In his words, “Many positions can be occupied by women and release your resources.”
