German President Joachim Gauck has dismissed Frank-Walter Steinmeier from the post of Foreign Minister and named Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel as his replacement in a ceremony on Friday, Sputnik News reports.
“In the name of the Federal Republic of Germany, I dismiss Frank-Walter Steinmeier from his post of Foreign Minister.” Gauck said at his official residence in Bellevue Palace.
Germany’s President has thanked Steinmeier for his activities as the foreign minister. Chancellor Angela Merkel, who attended the ceremony, congratulated Sigmar Gabriel on the new appointment.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier has served as Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2013.
