 ‘Wide’ and ‘narrow’ consolidation

February 11,2017 14:30

In Armenia, participating in electoral processes to some extent is defaming for all political parties and individuals.  And it is clear, why.  You have to show “pragmatism” to have a success.  But this election round is more defaming, especially for minor political parties.  Separately, they have no chance to overcome the 5% barrier, therefore, there is a need to look for “daddies.”  “Daddies” do not particularly need this, perhaps to leave an impression of “broad alliance” or “unprecedented consolidation of society”.  But one can live without such pompous phrases but without parliamentary mandates, it turns out, not.  Consequently, alliances are needed mainly to minor parties.

The “Tsarukyan” alliance which has not yet been formed is a classic example.  Evidently, everything here revolves around Tsarukyan’s personality whom a part of electorates consider miraculous and savior.  This belief plus money create good opportunities for the political party led by businessman, irrespective of whether it is called a “Tsarukyan” alliance or PAP party.  The number of received votes will not be affected by the fact whether there will be reorganized and non-reorganized Hunchaks, renewed PANM and several other minor parties next to Tsarukyan.  For Tsarukyan, “carrying on his back” these parties is simply a ballast, an excessive expense which is paid for “broad consolidation” phrase.  Agree that you will not envy the status of these minor parties to stand in a queue at the reception of the Brandy factory and to look at Tsarukyan’s secretary with hungry eyes hoping that the “King” will accept them and perhaps will offer a place on the list of the “alliance” appropriate to the status of a “party leader”.

But if Tsarukyan does not care whether it would be a PAP or an alliance as people vote personally for him, but for “Ohanyan-Oskanian” alliance, collecting a ballast of minor parties can simply be dangerous.  Firstly, because the “Unification” is not yet a finally organized party, it is rather to say a club where there are smart people.  Secondly, this party does not have the resources of Tsarukyan.  Do you want to use Seyran Ohanyan’s circumstance? It is normal (although I think that people do not need to pass a “quarantine” to become an opposition from a functionary).  Where are you dragging other?  Again, for the sake of “broad consolidation”?

It is not clear why the ANC where there is also no shortage of smart people creates an alliance.  If they want to include Stepan Demirchyan and maybe Grigor Harutyunyan on their list, what is the problem?  But why an alliance?  This one perhaps is a “narrow consolidation.”
