Religious leaders’ trilateral meeting brings no serious political advancement: Political scientist

April 15,2017 01:28

Pursuant to political scientist Sergey Minasyan’s opinion, the forthcoming trilateral meeting of the religious leaders dedicated to Artsakh issue can be regarded as a move aimed at confidence mechanisms or de-escalation.

“To draw out conclusions or to speak of the progress with reference to conflict settlement issue is pointless. Even if tomorrow a meeting was held in presidential level, it would not mean that serious progress on the conflict settlement would have taken place, forasmuch as the approaches of the sides are so contradictory, even despite the presence of all positive conditions it is hard to expect that throughout the upcoming years, if not dozens of years, we will have serious advancement”: Mr. Minasyan believes.

To our question – what the religious leaders can do regarding the conflict settlement issue, Mr. Minasyan answered: “To some extent – to reduce border tension, create new channels to mitigate the hatred between peoples and states.” To our question whether the meeting of the religious leaders will give the opportunity to ease the tension on the border regarding the level of hatred we have obtained throughout recent years and to reduce it, Mr. Minasyan replied: “Not to meet will be wrong in turn, every moment should be utilized to decrease that tension if our objective is to at least maintain ceasefire.” According to him, not only in Artsakh issue, but also in case of multifold world conflicts the meetings of religious leaders cannot bring forth serious political advancement, suchlike meetings solely contribute to the tension decrease.
