‘About 80 percent of Istanbul Armenians say “no”: ‘Agos’ daily editor

April 19,2017 09:31

Turkey’s foreign policy has become unpredictable and aggressive. The public and political figures in Ankara and Istanbul have such concerns. Bagrat Estukyan, the editor of Armenian sector of “Agos”, announced that Armenian Community generally voted “against” while referring to the recent referendum on constitutional reforms held in Turkey last week.

“About 80 percent of Istanbul Armenians said “no”. I went to the polling station on the election day and saw that “no” variants were exceeded eighty percent in the votes brought out of our ballot boxes. However, this did not find any response in total”.

According to Mr. Estukyan, the referendum cannot have much influence on the Armenian Community of 70.000 people. Referring to Erdogan’s policy, Mr. Estukian said: “Erdogan leads the country into great upheavals. He is autocratic therefore Turkey’s foreign policy has become unpredictable and an aggression is foreseen in foreign policy. Turkey becomes less controllable”. According to Mr. Estukian if the referendum of EU accession conducted 10 years ago was in Turkey, the majority of the country would vote “for” but now the number of “against” will be probably greater due to the country’s authorities.
