“In a surprisingly short while relations of a father and a son have been formed between us and I have had a participation in the course of Vazgen Sargsyan-Karen Demirchyan, sometimes also distant negotiations on a number of issues. I have known him as an educated, intelligent, a great organizer, charismatic man and I am sorry that today he is not with us”, told the member of the Armenian National Congress faction Gagik Jhangiryan during the interview with Aravot.am.
He had come to partake in the event dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Karen Demirchyan in the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet after Spendiarian. According to Gagik Jhangiryan, he has got acquainted with Karen Demirchyan in 1999, in the eve of Vazgen Sargsyan-Karen Demirchyan coalition formation. Until 1999 Mr. Jhangiryan has known Demirchyan from a distance, as other citizens, as the first secretary of the Central Committee. As stated by Gagik Jhangiryan, the political force created by them was powerful enough to make a lot of changes in Armenia, inasmuch as both leaders have enjoyed the unconditional trust of the people. However, the terror on October 27 has disrupted this all: “I have estimated it as a crime committed against the state of Armenia both then and now, forasmuch as it is not merely the annihilation of physical existence of the persons but the hardest struck on the state and I believe, the Republic of Armenia has not recovered after that struck until now.”
Let us recall, on October 27, 1999, a group of five headed by journalist Nairi Hunanyan broke into Parliament of Armenia when the Government was holding a session. They shot eight people: Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, National Assembly Speaker Karen Demirchyan, Deputy Speakers Yuri Bakshyan and Ruben Miroyan, Minister of Urgent Affairs Leonard Petrosyan, members of parliament Henrik Abrahamyan, Armenak Armenakyan and Michael Kotanyan.
