New York, April 27, 2017—The Committee to Protect Journalists will release its report, No Excuse: Mexico must break cycle of impunity in journalists’ murders, on May 2.
Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, with endemic impunity allowing criminal gangs, corrupt officials, and cartels to silence their critics. Since 2010, CPJ has documented more than 50 cases of journalists and media workers killed or disappeared. The violence is particularly acute in Veracruz state, where attacks on the press went unpunished during former Governor Javier Duarte de Ochoa’s term.
CPJ will mark the launch of the report on World Press Freedom Day (May 3, 2017) with a panel to discuss its findings. The launch event is at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel, in Veracruz city, at 10 a.m.
