Yazidis in Armenia celebrate their National Unity Day on May 1. The secular and spiritual leaders of the Yazidi community of Armenia talked about the importance of the holiday during the press conference. “On May 1, 2002, Armenia’s National Assembly passed a resolution recognizing the Yazidi language as the national language of Yazidi people, and the national religion”, mentioned the head of the “The National Union of Yazidis” NGO, Aziz Tamoyan, adding that Armenia’s Yazidi community is grateful to the Armenian Republic for this decision, since similar decisions made by the European Parliament and the European Union followed it.
Yazidis refer to the decision made by Armenian parliament as historical, hence they declared May 1 as Yazidis Unity Day. It has been celebrated for 15 years so far. “Over the centuries, our language and our religion were not officially recognized by any country. Only Armenia officially recognized it, and based on that the European Union, the European Parliament, and other international organizations recognized Yazidis language, which is a great joy for the Yazidis.”
