Aravot.am asked the head of defense Policy Department of Defense Ministry Levon Ayvazyan what can give Yuri Khachaturov’s appointment as Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty organization to Armenia? We also asked his opinion about the productivity of CSTO, as there are some opinions that Armenia’s membership in CSTO is formal when we need them, they are not with us.
Levon Ayvazyan answered that the appointment of Armenian representative as CSTO Secretary-General is appointment by quotas. Appointment of each county’s representative increases the role and reputation of that country within that organization. But it is necessary to take into account that it is an international position and the Secretary-General should at first represent CSTO interests, not only the interests of the Republic of Armenia. It is the same as that Secretary-General of NATO serves Norway interests or Secretary-General of the UN serves the interests of South Korea: “Our national interests within the frameworks of CSTO is to increase CSTO international reputation and image to improve the military management system, the military component will become more efficient.
