The new Armenia-EU framework agreement will be signed by November. The Head of EU Delegation to Armenia Peter Switalski announced it during the “EU-Armenia relations and perspectives” debate. The debate was organized by the “Globalization and Regional Cooperation” NGO. According to the ambassador, the technical problems are still underway.
“Armenia was the first country in the Eastern Partnership, which started to cooperate with the European Union with a very constructive submission”, said the ambassador adding that they are “agents of transformation”, and that the EU is not presuming any selfish interests. They simply want to be surrounded by transformed and more democratic countries.
Ambassador Switalski announced that they are now looking forward to the strategies of the newly formulating government to become clear. Their approaches are distinct: independence of judicial authorities, fight against corruption, rejection of discrimination, development of democratic institutions.
“If corruption in Armenia is not treated adequately, then the EU will hardly make any substantial investments in Armenia’s economy. Last year the EU received guarantees from the government of Armenia about their readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation in other areas”, said the ambassador, adding that the future of relations depends on Armenia.
