Head of the Armenian Delegation to NATO Parliamentary Assembly Koryun Nahapetyan talked about the Assembly’s spring session held in Tbilisi on May 26-29.
He said that the Azerbaijani delegate of the Defence and Security Committee raised an issue over the RA’s acquisition of “Iskander missile system, “I want to mention, that the Azerbaijani delegates are very concerned. It was obvious in their questioning. We clarified what is our defense policy, what are our security priorities. It was clearly mentioned that the acquisition of this missile system aims at restoring the balance of powers in South Caucasus. The Azerbaijani delegate also talked about the acquisition of weapons from Russia for free. We gave them a counter response, that recently Azerbaijan spends billions of dollars on purchasing offensive armament. We do not welcome the armaments race in the region, but on the other hand, all our actions are directed towards strengthening our defense capacities and ensuring military balance in the region”.
Koryun Nahapetyan also mentioned that Azerbaijan has become one of the largest countries importing armaments from Europe, which is a serious challenge and threat not only for the region but also beyond.
