People have complained of police to the Ombudsman the most: Although, Vladimir Gasparyan assures that they have improved

June 29,2017 13:39

While presenting the 2016 budget execution report in the National Assembly Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan mentioned, that most of the complaints they had received, 631 in number, were only against the police, and 300 were against penitentiaries.

Aravot.am asked Mr. Tatoyan whether we can say that the most violators of human rights are policemen in our country. He replied, “The fact that there are many complaints, does not automatically mean that the body is the most violating one. But the fact that there are many complaints, yes, indicates that the risk there is much more that human rights will be violated there. Most of the complaints against the police relate primarily to the very first stages when a person is taken to the police station from the street. This stage is dangerous in terms of preventing possible illegal prosecution against the person, also deprivation of liberty”.

In response to our question whether there is a difference in the number of complaints against the police if compared with the previous year, since Vladimir Gasparyan says that the police system has improved, Arman Tatoyan said, “The annual report will be discussed in a few days. Then we’ll talk in detail”.

Touching upon the actions of taking Zaruhi Postanjyan and her daughter to the police station by force from Taron Margaryan’s headquarters, Arman Tatoyan noted, that they are consistent about it, “Police actions are unacceptable to me in terms of the manner of taking them to the police station”.
