Project to let off additional water from Sevan adopted: ‘Yelq’ decides to apply to Constitutional Court

July 04,2017 19:41

The Parliament discussed and put to vote the project implying the implementation of 100 million cubic meters complimentary water intake from lake Sevan during an extraordinary session. Member of the Parliament from “Tsarukyan” alliance Vardan Bostanjyan announced that their faction is forced to vote for. While presenting the viewpoint of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation faction the secretary of the faction Aghvan Vardanyan noted that the lake throughout these years has raised for 4 meters and 15 years still remain to accomplish the project and raise Sevan for 2 meters in the future.

For Aghvan Vardanyan it is ununderstandable why the environmentalists raise a SOS alert and say “this is a catastrophe”. As stated by him, elementary logic tells one that no catastrophe is in place, it is not the first time that they implement a water intake from Sevan, they have done it before, no catastrophe has occurred: “It is natural, the environmentalists do their job, this is their subject matter. But from another perspective, we daily see the villagers trying to close the road, we have water shortage this year and this is a serious problem.”

Aghvan Vardanyan mentioned that this is a coalition government, therefore, they also should vote for, although he suggested them to have a look again at the mother law which was adopted 15 years ago.

Before the voting, “Yelq” MP Artak Zeynalyan informed that the question of 130.000 villagers could have been solved in some other way, let this project not be represented as it is done solely in favor of the villagers. Zeynalyan told that they will vote against this law, inasmuch as it is anti-constitutional. Zeynalyan urged the MPs support them in applying to the Constitutional Court. Eventually, the law was put to vote and was adopted by the 1st reading with 74  for and 3 against.
