Applying to the ECHR for ‘Electric Yerevan’ Cases

July 21,2017 13:06

The Criminal Court of Appeals of the Republic of Armenia rejected Mikayel Kirakosyan’s complaint on “Electric Yerevan” case today. The latter litigates the decisions of the courts of first instance and the body conducting the proceedings, claiming that his rights and freedoms have been violated.

Tatevik Siradeghyan, Mikayel Kirakosyan’s defender, a lawyer at Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Yerevan Office, does not agree with the decision of the Court of Appeal. She and her client will litigate this verdict as well.

Mikayel Kirakosyan was not present at today’s session. Speaking to reporters, the lawyer said that the reason is the distrust towards the judiciary system. Asked why they continue to go through the courts, Tatevik Siradeghyan said that this is the only option for applying to the European Court of Human Rights. And their ultimate goal is to apply to the ECHR.

It should be reminded that two cases have been instituted in the Special Investigative Service for the events of June 23 and on July 6. The investigation for the June 23 case is still underway, except for a few cases. In August last year, some accusations were incriminated and sent to courts.
