CPJ today joined seven other media rights organizations–all part of the Council of Europe’s Platform to protect journalism and promote the safety of journalists–in signing a joint letter to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The letter calls on the president to ensure an effective investigation into the murder of Pavel Sheremet, the prominent journalist murdered in Kiev a year ago today, and to ensure the safety of journalists working in Ukraine.
The letter comes a week after CPJ traveled to Kiev to launch its special report, “Justice denied: Ukraine comes up empty in probe of Pavel Sheremet’s murder.” During the trip, a CPJ delegation met with Poroshenko to discuss the findings of the report and to present recommendations to the Ukrainian authorities. Poroshenko told the delegation that his government has the political will to solve the case.
