In an infrequently seen move of political bipartisanship, Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives have agreed on a broad sanctions package targeting Russia, Iran and North Korea, lawmakers from both parties announced on Saturday.
Steny Hoyer, democratic representative from Maryland and the party’s number two in the House, said in a statement that he was “pleased” that a bipartisan agreement had been reached.
“The legislation ensures that both the Majority and Minority are able to exercise our oversight role over the Administration’s implementation of sanctions,” his statement added.
Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who pushed to have North Korea sanctions included in the bill, tweeted that, “Those who threaten America and our interests should take notice – your actions have consequences.”
A previous version of the bill that encompassed only Iran and Russia had been approved overwhelmingly by the Senate last month. A vote on the new draft in the House is expected to take place next Tuesday before the lawmakers leave for August recess.
