Three thousand years ago, on August 3, twenty thousand Yezidis were killed, more than 3,000 Yezidi women and children are currently in captivity.
Yesterday, group of Yezidi community members held a protest demonstration and candle lighting at Liberty Square in memory of their compatriots who were killed and taken captive. Chairman of the Yezidi National Committee, Khdr Hajoyan, says protest are taking place in Russian cities as well.
“In 2014, the Islamic State terrorist group entered the Yezidi Shangal region in northern Iraq and committed genocide against the local Yezidis”. According to Khdr Hajoyan, 600 thousand Yezidi became refugees.
According to the deputy chairman of the Yezidi National Committee Sashik Sultanyan, what has happened is definitely a genocide: “Armenia should be viewed in two aspects: a member and country of the international community, where Yezidi community representatives live. Armenia is one of the first countries to react to the Yezidis genocide, the RA president condemned the Yezidis genocide from the UN tribune. In this sense, the steps taken by Armenia are very important, on the other hand, we can do more”.
