“Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan participates in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. This implies that Armenia and Iran have no problems in political relations. Honoring the inauguration ceremony in the presence of the President means that bilateral relations between Armenia and Iran are at a high level”, Iranologist Karen Mkrtchyan expressed such an opinion at the press conference.
He stressed that the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources is also in the Armenian delegation: “Economic block minister’s’ visit is important for making progress in economic relations”.
Touching upon the President’s interview to the Iranian media, the expert noticed: “There are important commonalities in the foreign policy of Armenia and Iran, as the President has mentioned. In my opinion, the most important is the Iranian nuclear project, which the Iranian side managed to solve through diplomatic channels. In the same way, the Republic of Armenia is for resolving the issue of Artsakh in a diplomatic, peaceful way. In this respect, the foreign policy of Iran and Armenia coincides, since Armenia and Iran aim to be guided by negotiations. This arrow is also targeted at Turkey, which is a threat to security. The President stressed that Iran and Armenia are security makers in the region, which you cannot say about Turkey and Azerbaijan”.
According to Karen Mkrtchyan, Armenia should have expectations from its president’s visit, as the Free Economic Zone of Meghri will be put into operation soon: “It will be a special program for the development of Iranian and Armenian businesses, which will cover the EAEU economic zone”.
