‘Protection of Russia always comes at a price: Armenia should always keep this in mind’, David Setter

August 05,2017 19:40

“Protection of Russia always comes at a price, and the long run interest of Russia is not to protect Armenia, but to protect the Russian regime. And Russia makes decisions on that basis. Armenia needs to keep that in mind”, 1976-1982 Financial Times newspaper correspondent in Moscow, 1982 The Wall Street Journal expert on USSR affairs, currently a senior researcher at Hudson University, USSR, and Russian affairs analyst, David Setter told during the interview with Aravot.am.

We inquired from the analyst how much influence Donald Trump’s recent initiatives may have on Armenians, for example, the one relating to the possibility of receiving a “Green Card”. If the Congress approves, the law will cancel the “Green Card” lottery, and will limit the possibility of receiving “Green Card” for people without education and professional skills.

We inquired whether this was a sensible decision, Mr. Setter stated that this is an American immigration policy with which the world has to conciliate. Then he mentioned that he understands Armenians’ concern, as many of them may be deprived of the possibility to leave for the United States. “I know that many Armenians have many relatives in the United States, and they would like to emigrate too. However, we must reconcile with this situation, as this is what the US immigration policy dictates. The reason for this initiative is also the votes received by Donald Trump, as he needs to justify people’s expectations”.
