Armenian ‘Valkyries’

August 16,2017 12:44

There are characters in German-Scandinavian mythology, called “Valkyries”. These fighting women are usually depicted with weapons and armor, helmets decorated with horns, with spears and shields, in which northern lights are reflected. German composer Richard Wagner probably liked these aggressive women very much and wrote an opera with their name, the most famous symphonic part of which is called “Flight of the Valkyries”.

This wonderful musical piece sounds in my ears when I think about Armenian women, who once were called “BTR”. In 1988-90s, they were ready to beat all those who, in their opinion, defended the “thief, robber and plunderer” Communists, and eventually they racked the Supreme Council President Hrant Voskanyan’s brains over. In 1996, they were ready with the same enthusiasm to beat anyone who, in their opinion, wanted to defend “thief, robber, and plunderer” Levon, and eventually they racked the brains of the President and Vice President of the National Assembly over (violence is boomerang, friends). In 2008, they were ready to beat those, who, in their opinion, suspected that Levon had come to save the nation. And so on. I cannot say whether we have been dealing with the same women for 30 years. Perhaps not. It is simply the tradition of our political life, which has a stable place in our lives.

“Years passed,” as the famous song says, and now those, who attacked the police detachment, are the most radical force. It’s natural, that the “Armenian valkyries ” should support this group, go out into the street with their small group, scold and curse those whom they don’t like: not only the authorities, but also casual passersby who do not join them (“Why don’t you support our people? Don’t you see that the state is being destroyed?”), or whose facial expression, in their opinion, tells that they are “Serzh supporters”. In all the cases described, of course, men are those, who “push”, but they behave properly, appropriate to “political figures”.

…..Women are emotional, they love “romantic heroes”, or those who present themselves so. Who can say that’s bad?
