Killing of Swedish journalist Kim Wall points at threats faced by journalists, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media says

August 27,2017 17:35

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Désir today welcomed the Danish authorities’ swift and thorough investigation of the killing of the Swedish freelance journalist Kim Wall, whose body was identified earlier this week.

“I trust that the authorities will bring the perpetrators to justice. My sincere condolences go out to the victim’s family, friends and colleagues,” Désir said, noting that police have already arrested a suspect.

The journalist was last seen on 10 August aboard a submarine in the waters outside Copenhagen before she went missing. According to reports, she was interviewing the builder of the submarine and researching a feature about him and his inventions.

“Regrettably, journalism is a risky profession for many of those practicing it. Those working in the field fully deserve public respect and protection. Female journalists are particularly vulnerable to attack and intimidation,” the Representative said.

“The journalist’s death is also a very sad reminder that editors and media outlets need to recognize the increasingly vital role that freelancers play in the news coverage. Kim Wall will be remembered for her courageous reporting,” he said.
