On 13 November, the European Council appointed Toivo Klaar as EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia. Mr Klaar will promote regional cooperation and work towards a peaceful settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the Georgia crisis.
In particular, the Special Representative will co-chair and participate in the Geneva International Discussions concerning the consequences of the 2008 conflict in Georgia. Toivo Klaar succeeds Ambassador Herbert Salber (of German nationality), who had held the post since 8 July 2014.
EU Special Representatives promote the EU’s policies and interests in certain regions and countries and engage in issues of concern to the EU. They play an active role in consolidating peace, stability and the rule of law.
