International Day of People with Disabilities Celebrates Accomplishments, Notes Need for Sustainability

December 04,2017 14:08

On this, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan would like to recognize the achievements and contributions of Armenians with disabilities to create a more just and equal society. People with disabilities have contributed to Armenian society in numerous ways. They are parliamentarians, civil society leaders, teachers, lawyers, artists and world champion athletes. On the international stage, Armenians with disabilities have proudly showcased Armenian history and culture, and have shared how much they have been able to accomplish.  The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 15 percent of the Armenian population has a disability.

The theme of this year’s annual celebration, first recognized by the United Nations in 1992, is “Transformation Towards Sustainable and Resilient Society for All.”  Armenia, in its signature to the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, has shown its support for the key principles enshrined in these two documents, namely that that all persons with all types of disabilities have the right to enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The Embassy encourages the Government of the Republic of Armenia to continue to raise awareness and promote the rights of those Armenians who have a disability. With universal accessibility, people with disabilities have greater potential to contribute to the Armenian society, culture, and economy.  Passage and implementation of the RA Draft Law on the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and their Social Inclusion is one way the government will support the dignity, rights, and well-being of all its citizens.
