EU4Energy: Energy Community to assist Georgia in gas market reform

January 12,2018 14:08

On 9 January, the Energy Community Secretariat launched another technical assistance project in Tbilisi, Georgia, under the EU4Energy Governance Project. The project will contribute to opening the gas market, attracting investments and increasing the security of gas supply in Georgia.

A new draft natural gas distribution network code will cover the operation, management and functioning of natural gas distribution networks in Georgia. The new network code will be developed between January and March 2018 in cooperation with the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission.

The establishment of the new regulation framework in the gas sector is part of a natural gas market reform carried out by Georgia as part of its commitments under the Energy Community Treaty.

The EU4Energy initiative covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the longer term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
