‘Armen Sargsyan cannot essentially change situation in Armenia as president’: Hovhannes Igityan

February 01,2018 14:34

“The next president cannot change the situation in Armenia”, former chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Republic of Armenia, international expert Hovhannes Igityan said during a press conference.

According to Mr. Igityan, no matter how much the presidential candidate nominated by the Republican Party of Armenia, Armen Sargsyan meets with political forces, tries to give messages to the public, we should understand that he does not come to the office with the help of the public.

Mr. Igityan explained: “Hence, expecting the person elected for this position cannot really change the situation in Armenia will be wrong. But I am glad that a person with education and experience is appointed in this position, otherwise, we expect a person with a nickname, or a person who has a criminal background for any position, as it is the case in our National Assembly”.

Mr. Igityan said that he had a subjective attitude towards Armen Sargsyan and told about their cooperation: “We have gone a long way together. At the time when it was important to present Armenia in the civilized world, he was the coordinator of our EU ambassadors, and I was the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Republic of Armenia. Armen Sargsyan had a great role in the internationalization of Artsakh issue”.

Mr. Igityan responded to the rumors as if Armen Sargsyan comes to develop Armenia’s western, European foreign policy: “The policy towards Russia will not be conditioned by the president’s post or personality. It is the policy of Armenia and first of all, it is conditioned by the Prime Minister, and the likely candidate is Serzh Sargsyan. Russia has almost monopoly position in all spheres: political, military, economic and energy issues. I do not think that Armen Sargsyan will be able to keep balance in the policy of “both”. There is no such policy. Armenia is pursuing a full pro-Russian policy. Even signing an agreement with the EU, it did not change any policy in that direction. If the situation, people do not change, it will go on this way”.
