ANNOUNCEMENT
On February 19, during the working consultation taken place at Yerevan Municipality, Mayor Taron Margaryan assigned to develop proposals on regulating media activities inside Yerevan Municipality building. It is evident that this assignment is a consequence of the recent incidents evolved in the Municipality, pursuing an aim of restricting journalists’ legal functioning.
Yerevan City Council “Yelq” bloc announced that the regulations in power irregularly restrict the co-working of City Council members with media. Consequently, further restricting regulations are refused to be adopted by the bloc.
Simultaneously, let us note that in this context any given regulation on co-working with media inside administrative buildings and organizations under the control of Yerevan Municipality should rely on the provisions on “Freedom of Information” and “Local Self-government in Yerevan” of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.
Hereby we call on Taron Margaryan to refrain from regulations damaging the transparency of Yerevan Municipality functioning and accountability.
